The Never Ending Day

The first day of the trip was about to begin for me- what turned out to be a rather long Friday the 19th of October!

The day of departure began with a bright and early 6:00am start in Brisbane. After finding all the family photos the previous night and deciding it would be a good idea to scan them all I was a little sleep deprived!

Luckily my good friend Ted has a heap of spare time at the moment and was able to drop me to the airport, so after I said my farewells to Mum and Ewan it was off and away!

Upon arrival to the Auckland Airport Em and I were planning on meeting at the gate as neither of us were going to have mobile phones anymore; however since the stopover time was a little long, no gate was nominated and it seemed it might be a long wait to catch up. I decided to go for a wander around the airport to see if I could bump into her and on my second lap of the terminal she happened to be coming through the customs check in… what a fluke!

The 13 hour flight direct to Vancouver was much more comfortable than it should have been due to the number of vacant seats. We spread ourselves out and managed to get a good few hours sleep which is uncommon for both of us! There were a heap of young Aussie kids on the plane too – similar to our age all heading in the same direction… a sign of things to come.
The Vancouver airport was quite nice and provided a bit of an example of the BC wilderness as we queued in the customs and immigration lines. We were finally there!.. Although it still didn’t feel like the massive adventure - only a holiday. The full scale of the trip will eventually become a realisation at some point.

Vancouver Airport

During the trek through Downtown our packs felt much heavier than the previous SE Asia trip! We were slightly out of practice and did not have our bags setup right at all... None-the-less we easily managed to locate the hostel with the assistance of some lovely locals at the airport and were more than ready for a decent shower.

After the long day that it was we were both buggered and ready for a decent sleep. We crashed at 7:30pm local time and crawled out of bed in the morning at 10:30... the longest either of us have spent in bed for a long while!

We were now ready to begin exploring the city of Vancouver.
